It’s been a minute since I published an issue of our newsletter. A new series begins soon (on Baptism!), but for now, here’s an issue on words.
When I read, I discover words that I don’t know. Here are twenty recent favorites from my summer reading. Did you know any of these?
Aleatoric - depending on the throw of a dice or on chance; random.
Canapés - a type of hors d'oeuvre; a small, prepared, and often decorative food, consisting of a small piece of bread, puff pastry, or a cracker wrapped or topped with some savoury food, held in the fingers and often eaten in one bite.
Cogido – Spanish for “caught”
Dilettantism - The act of behaving like a dilettante, of being an amateur or “dabbler,” sometimes in the arts.
Epiphanic – adj. form of epiphany; relating to or typical of a moment when you suddenly realize or understand something important
Febrile - having or showing the symptoms of a fever
Japery - acting like a clown or buffoon.
Lapidarily - of or relating to precious stones or the art of working with them;
Lumbago – low back pain
Meeskeit – Jewish term for ugliness or an ugly person
Noodge - an irritating person who persistently nags and whine
Pleonasm - Noun - the use of more words than are necessary to convey meaning (e.g. see with one's eyes ), either as a fault of style or for emphasis.
Praecox – Latin; very early, primitive
Quinine – medication for malaria
Sacristan - is an officer charged with care of the sacristy (vestiment room), the church, and their contents.
Sententious – adj. - given to moralizing in a pompous or affected manner.
Soigné – adj. - dressed very elegantly; well groomed.
Spangle - a small thin piece of glittering material, typically sewn as one of many on clothing for decoration; a sequin.
Surcease – noun; cessation
Susurration – noun; whispering, murmuring, or rustling
